Fractals in Chemistry
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (April, 1995)
Author: Andrew Harrison
Average review score:

I'm no genius, but I sure learned something from this book.
I purchased this book when I was offered a summer project in the Physical Chemistry department to conduct experiments with fractals to develop an algorithim for Maple. Well, this book is small, consise, yet not dry, which is a very hard optimization to achieve. I feel I got a lot from this book beyond the math, and gained a little insight to how structured chaos really is. I wish I had more time to devote to this theory, and I recommend this book to anyone that wants to learn about fractals, but doesn't want to have to invest 300 pages of reading to get the jist.

General Techniques of Cell Culture
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (November, 1997)
Authors: Maureen A. Harrison and Ian F. Rae
Average review score:

From Book to Bench-Cell Culturing Made Easy
Whether a first year college student or a seasoned researcher, General Techniques of Cell Culture is a must. GTCC simplifies the complicated world of cell culturing without insulting. The authors, Maureen A. Harrison and Ian F. Rae, make no assumptions about their readers, and take the task of explaining large amounts of scientific information in an organized and easy to read format. This handbook goes beyond general lab techniques and provides not only the "how-to", but also gives the developing lab the where at, as it rounds out each section with a directory of services and researchable references. By providing time honored techniques, General Techniques of Cell Culture also takes some of the trial and error out of propagating healthy cells in the lab. This alone should make the transition from book to bench less tedius and more productive.

Geological Perspectives of Global Climate Change (A A P G Studies in Geology, 47)
Published in Paperback by American Association of Petroleum Geologists (March, 2001)
Authors: Lee C. Gerhard, William E. Harrison, and Bernold M. Hanson
Average review score:

Geological Perspectives of Global Climate Change
For those who want to understand the difference between global warming (which many believe is human induced) and climate change (which is natural and always occurring), Geological Perspectives is a MUST READ. While many would state the book is anti-green biased because it is produced by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, it references literally 1000's of refereed scientific journal published papers that begin to reveal that this subject is a lot more uncertain than the IPCC claims.

While written for the general public, some sections require a background in the physical sciences to fully appreciate the book's content.

Yes, it is hard to believe that for the past 6000 years, the earth has actually been cooling (near it's coldest during geological time). However, humans have benefitted recently when temperatures have been on average warmer than colder. Don't under estimates the earth's ability to adjust to climate change!

best lighthouse book ever written
This is the best lighthouse book I have ever read. It's jammed packed with information you would never find in any other lighthouse book. Strange and unusal tales, like the man who built many of our lighthouses and missed becoming presient by a matter of hours, or the man who ran our lighthouse service for 32 years is also the same man who saved the Declration of Independence. This is one lighthouse book you will want to have

Green Fields and White Lines: Baseball Poems
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (July, 1995)
Authors: Robert L. Harrison and Andy Nelson
Average review score:

A collection of funny and touching baseball poetry
These poems provide something for everyone who treasures our national pastime. They vary from hilarious (when his team loses the big game, a husband tells his wife that a foul tip from INSIDE their TV shattered the screen), to nostalgic (a child's thrill at opening the season's first pack of baseball cards), to heartfelt (a divorced couple whose son goes to Mets games with mom, Yankee games with dad), to poignant (the heroic death of Roberto Clemente: "The waves have lapped too many times, since your plane of hope went down, robbing us of the last farewell").

There are sections devoted to: Folktales, History, Teams, Milestones, Players, Fans, The Hobby. Harrison's poems resonate with those memories and legends that mean so much to fans - where we were (or wish we were): watching Jackie Robinson's first at bat, Ted Williams' last. Even those magic numbers that mean so much to fans get their due: 4192, 511, 61*, ad infinitum.

David Stevens, author of Baseball's Radical for All Seasons
